Once a year, the borders between all three countries are open for some hours during the popular "Barents Friendship Skiing Event"
This almost twelve kilometres long skiing-track, starting and ending in Rajakoski village in Russia, crosses Finnish and Norwegian borders. One of the highlights beeing Muotkavaara/Krokfjell border point, where borders of three countires and three time zones meet - it is a very unique place and event.
On the Norwegian side participants are mostly skiing in the Øvre Pasvik Landscape Protected Area and at Muotkavaara/Krokfjell they are skiing in the Øvre Pasvik National Park, on the Finnish side Vätsäri Wilderness Area and on the Russian side Pasvik State Nature Reserve is in the vicinity - all areas part of Pasvik-Inari trilateral park.
In 2018 the Friendship skiing event took place on Saturday 10th March, almost 3500 skiiers participating!
Murmansk Sport Committee is responsible for the event together with other authorities and partners. All three countries Border Commissioners coordinate and cooperate closely to carry out this annual event.
